Hi!
I have a website, and I write everything out myself - even the HTML. I code everything by hand. And I'd just like to know - does anyone else do that, or do they use programs to do it for them? I've never met anyone who knows the least bit about HTML - let alone anyone else who codes it, 'cept my dad who uses programs to do it.
Just curious.
Scratch
I have a freewebs site, and it does the HTML for ya, just tell it what u want it to say. If u wanna put things in bold or italics or name a link, then u have to do the HTML code yourself, but anything little like the body text it'll do that for u. I do know how to do a bit of coding by hand though.
I't just better to do the whole thing by hand if ya know how, ya can customize and make your site work a lot better that way. When you do it with a program, as I have found out, things don't appear or work the way you want them to even if you put the link in by hand.
jeffreyshockley - that's what i think. I use a program called Note Tab to do the Html because Microsoft word is a pain in the butt.
Music Master - I used to use Freewebs, but it's freaking hard to deal with - at least for me. I wanted a wider range of stuff to do with my site, so I just used the website space we got from our internet service provider; I have more freedom that way.
scratch
mswork is shit for creating html.
It's much easier to use notepad or notetab or whatever else.
I'm personally using cse html validator - You simply type all cod by hand and it'll check it for mistakes - and upgraded version can do far more.
But I only have basic version.
Never heard of that before; sounds interesting. Is it free?
And yes, word and works are crap for html. haha. They delete all the <s and >s you put in and then you have to go enter them again. That's why I prefer Note Tab. I've never tried note pad for HTML though.
I use notepad to do all of my coding.
CSE html validator is for free, but you can pay upgraded version, which can check php, css, validate links and much more.
But free version offers quite lots of features.
Yeah, that's what I have too. Its pretty nice.
I should check it out; it sounds interesting.
I haven't done a ton of website writing, though some here and there. But I've never used anything but notepad to write it. I've heard horor stories about how word at least coughs up horrid code. I'd rather know exactly what code's being used, and how it works on my pages. I do wonder though how big websites keep their stuff updated when they have to do constant updates.
I tried learning to code by hand, but quickly saw that it was too complex for me...I chickened out. I used either note pad or note tab lite when I tried it.
LOL. I guess one of the reasons I don't use Note Tab's built in coding help thing is because I can't. I get confused, I don't get it, I do the wrong thing, screw up and have to totally redo the webpage I'm writing ... *shudder.* I gave up. I just code by hand 'cause it's easier for me. Haha.
Yeah, I code my stuff with my bn and notepad, and the bn's keyword has absolutely no idea... I also have a test page I mainly maintain on my bn that has stuff I just learned and am, well, testing out. If anyone wants it, please pm or email me. Also I have a page I made for fun about 8 months ago called "the no-break space memorial!" It talks some about the no-break space ( ) if anyone wants that...
I only know a little bit of html. just enough for blogs and such. Writing an entire page seems too complicated.
All html coding I perform manually using textpad 4.0
Unfortunately I haven't quite grasped css just yet. I use tables to control my layout.
Never use word to write plain text like html. It not only deletes characters, but adds hidden characters at the end of each doc.
Most uses css to control massive sites.
Also, frames makes it really easy to maintain a site 10k + pages
I 've used notepad all my life and even in my html college class the only program i used different was when i did css and used visual basic.net
I've never done anything with CSS. Is it hard to learn?
Listen, html is easy ai learned everything I need to know in 2 hours with exceptions of tables and frames. My entire site is coded by hand I don't use any program like frontpage like I used to because it hides code under neeth what I am coding and dont' like that.
yes, html is easy. didn't learn css I didn't need it.
I'll learn php.
Don't learn javascript - it's shit.
Well, anyone coulda told ya that one. I need to learn how to do tables and frames. I know the basics, and cody's right, didn't take me to long to grasp it.
javascript is what??????? Javascript is cool! Whatcha talkin about?
post 19: what resources did you use to learn html in 2 hours? would be interested in learning from them. I know enough to code links, but thats all I can hand code successfully. the complex web design work I have done was done in word.
JAVASCRIPT IS NOT GOOD SOLUTION.
It can be disabled and misused - php is better.
And sometimes javascript don't work with screenreaders.
Java script I think most if not all of us can agree it's a bitch and I'd never use it for anything.
I was focused and I just googled for online html beginner tutorials. Wasn't that hard. I used a couple of them. Don't ask me what they were cause I don't remember. Frames were a bitch to learn and until I did I had no idea what people were talking about. It wasn't until an english friend showed me how that I understood it.
Frames are good - i don't use them, because I don't need them, but I heart, that it's little bit complicated to print it.
I personaly don't print it, but maybe some visitors of my pages, which are in development by the way will.
I found my HTML turtorials from W3C and just searching HTML Turtorials. W3C was excellent. Now, i gotta figure out how to do maybe tables, but for my freewebs pages, I don't think I'll need them.
Tables are relatively simple. And frames simpler.
You just need to have prepared pages, that you want to put in to frames.
Then create third page with <frameset> tags, I think - didn't do it for a looong time and probably won't do it for loooonger time.
google and learn - it's really easy compared to php.
I learned most my HTML from www.w3schools.com. I love that site. It's so useful. :)
I've not learned CSS because right now I don't need it. It looks really complicated though.
it can be useful this way we can eliminate frames. however you need to include your css headers in each html document...
Ahh that's the site scratch. That's where I got most of my training. Easy to navigate around, and really easy to follow instructions.
It is. It's the best HTML tutorial site I've ever found.
lucky i found this thread... i was a hard core html, php coder back in the day, but that has been 6 or more years. I am very very very very rusty in that respect. Plus that is when i could see, so I also was a big psp *paint shop pro* graphics person too. I am gonna check out that site that was mentioned earlier. I think me getting back into coding is like riding a bike, i know I can do it, just need to put my mind to it. I so loved php, yes I know crazy. Any body have any good php sites? i need a refresher badly.
Thanks...
Try W3C. I think they have that, HTML, and CSS, but i'm not positive on it.
Hi all,
I learned a bit of HTML, but only the basics. I was able to create a basic webpage with lists, headings, and some basic formatting. I did the code manually using notepad. If I ever take up HTML seriously, I'd wanna code everything by hand and not use a program like MS word to do it for me. When I tried it with Word it added all this extra code, as people said before, and I didn't understand what it was so thought I'd just do it by hand.
Tara.
That's another thing I gotta figure out is lists. I can do headings though. I also have a basic site...kinda.
its right here
As you'll know if you read my other post, I've just put up a site, (yesterday). I coded this site by hand in notepad, using a mixture of php, html and css. I don't use frames, because I don't need to. If you use "include files" in php, then there's no need, that I can see anyway, for frames. Plus if you use include files, you can swap things around very easily. Like on one of my pages, I have the main navigation links in atext file, the main text in another, (like the welcome page for example). So if I wanted the welcome text above the links, I'll just have to swap around the two includes. Piece of yummy chocolate frosted cake it is, and a lot of fun to do it is too. I'm no expert, and have no idea how pretty my site actually looks, but it works, and my JAWS can read it ok, so.
On the css tutorial thing, there's a great one I found here at http://www.w3schools.com/css/ I was unsure how to do a few things for my site, (I amended the css today), so learned what I needed in a matter of minutes. lol So if I can do it guys, anyone can. I'll shut up soon I promise lol, but before I go here's a few php resources for ya I've found in my years of farting about with web sites. Hope these help:
The PHP Resource Index Complete Scripts Games
When I had Simon's Games, I was always on the look out for new stuff to put on my site, some great stuff here. Look around at the other stuff too, not just the games, there's a load of ready made stuff there.
Spoono - PHP Tutorials - File Creator-Editor
Um, *blush* I'm not sure exactly why I had this in my favourites, but it said php tutorial, so hope that helps too lol.
Table of Contents - Practical PHP Programming
This is a good site. If I remember rightly it's php 5, but it takes you right from the basics, up to working with stuff like xml and mysql and stuff like that. Some nifty stuff here.
PHP PHP Manual - Manual
Depending where you're at as far as level of php programming, this can either be brilliant or bloody confusing lol. I use it for reference only as some of the examples, last I looked anyway, were a bit ... in need of work lol.
And there we have it, if I come across more I'll post it here.
hth then folks,
Cheers,
Simon
